Tooth Implants gone bad

In my previous posts, I mentioned that I had been feeling quite sick the past weeks. That was also the reason why, aside from being busy at work, I was unable to post blogs though I have lots of interesting things in my head to think about.

The past weeks when I felt like having a flu,I felt a pain in the left part of my neck and also pain behind my left ear. I also had stiff shoulder muscles. I had migraine and even elevated blood pressure and therefore when I visited my physician, she gave me some relaxant and suspected that I was just stressed at work.

Then I decided to visit a dentist and complained to him all the things I had been feeling. He did a CT scan and it revealed that one of my two tooth implants which were done 2 years ago was not done properly and was infected. He advised me to remove it. The problem I had was that it's crown was a part of a bridge which was attached to a healthy tooth and the crown of the other implant.

I went to another dentist and a third dentist for a second and third opinion... both gave me the same advise as the first one. The infected tooth implant should be removed as it was already affecting my nerves and muscles, etc. Now I know the real reason why I had been feeling sick lately.

To make the long story short, I had just came back from the dental surgeon who removed not only one implant but both. After removing the first infected implant, he found out the other one beside it was also showing some signs of infection and therefore he advised me to remove it to and I agreed. The dentist cleaned the jaw bone area where the implants were once located and also put some bone graft on the pits before stitching my gums close. The process though not painful during the surgery is now giving me pain. Thanks to the scalpel used by the dentist to open my gums just to remove the implants.

I am yet to talk to or maybe sue the dentist who did my "former" tooth implants two years ago. But while I am still thinking of how I would do it, I just wrote this blog to warn individuals not to just listen to or trust dentists who would advise you to have tooth implants. Think and study it first and ask around on the pros and cons. One thing important is also to look at the record of the dentist, because a few of them are just pretending and collecting big sums of money from clients who they know could afford to pay. This world is really not free from cons who take advantage of people;s trust just to earn money- and we could find them in whatever profession.

For anybody who would like to communicate with me on what actually happened and how and why my implants had gone bad, please feel free to leave me a comment and your email address so I could communicate with you the details. They were just too much to be written on this blog.

I am now on 5 days medical leave, recovering from the (quite a major) dental surgery at home with the help of antibiotics, anti-swelling tabs and pain relievers.

After recovering from this, I will have a temporary denture while thinking of whether I would still do another new set of implants after the failed ones or will just replace my temporary dentures with permanent ones. God please help me to decide!

Sorry to hear about your experience. I almost got implants but settled for a bridge in one area and just let another area in the back of my mouth go with nothing. It can't be seen and doesn't affect my teeth.

I've had several bad experiences with dentists but not as bad as yours. My bottom teeth are now crooked because a dentist fit my night guard incorrectly.

I'm in my 50's too. Next year I'll be in my 60's uggg. I'm told I look pretty good too LOL

So sad to hear about it dear. You're right, we should do some background checking before we pursue with any dental procedures. After doing some checking, it is better to keep to the most reputable one to guarantee our safety. You know, our teeth are not just a set that helps us in chewing our food. Anything that goes bad in our mouth can affect our entire body. You just felt it when your nerves were affected by your infected tooth. The reason behind it is that the parts of our body are interconnected to one another.

When you decide on having additional dental implants, make it a point that you'll have regular check ups to avoid inconveniences. And oh to help you decide here, read this blog:
http://pearlbrited.blogspot.com/2010/09/most-advanced-dental-implant-options.html. It contains factors to be considered before having a dental implant.

I seem to be having a similar problem, I have had implants for about 10 years, and problems never ceased.

Most recently, in early November, I was cleaning my upper front bridge one evening with a flossing brush in between implants, and felt as if I had touched a piece of food left there, but after that, the implant area started to pulsate whenever I was doing the slightest physical effort. After a while, I became ill with what looked like flu symptoms, a swelling in the right ear, and alternations of cold and hot bouts, which would leave me drenched in sweat. After making an x-ray, my dentist insists that the implant is not infected, and just performed some cleaning with ultrasounds. It did not work, I still feel as if I had a temperature, although I am not running a fever. Now the dentist sent me for some blood tests. The thing is, the dentist appears not willing to confront the problem, and is trying to bamboozle me into believing the implant is OK, because removing it would mean breaking a bridgework which covers two-thirds of my upper jaw under five implants. I really don't know what to do, since I am an expat living in the Czech Republic, and my dentist is an old Czech who does not speak English, while my Czech is pretty flimsy. But the bottom line is, I am not feeling well, and this state is affecting my ability to work. Has anyone experienced hot and cold bouts because of an implant gone wrong? What should I do? ET, Prague

While having an implant done, the dentist was checking the fit of the crown to the template. He said 'uh ow' as the crown would not fit the way he was trying it. He turned it around and it then fit. He already had the posts in my jaw. I believe he had put the template in my mouth backwards. He proceeded to put the crown in and said nothing. At re-checks later I asked why the crown was leaning to the inside of my mouth. He said he had to drill the holes where they would avoid nerves. This implant has never been comfortable, food is always getting stuck, the gum never filled in around it and I have an identation in my jaw line.I am also having fevers and suspect it's infected. I've suffered too long and paid too much to just let this go. WHERE DO I GO NEXT FOR HELP LEGAL AND CORRECTIVE?

Hi guys, it's ET from Prague again.
Two months have passed, and the problems only got from bad to works with my implant, which the doctor had said it was not infected. After suffering uselessly a so-called cleaning surgical procedure at the beginning of February, I finally had the implant removed on March 2, by a different doctor, because by trust in the first one and his clinic are gone. The bone around the implant was indeed infected, so the dentist scraped it thoroughly and game me stitches after he placed local antibiotics inside. I can't say that I have recovered completely, I still have some headaches and chills, but I am told it is part of the healing process now. Hope So. I will keep the implant as a reminder. Meanwhile, I am demanding financial compensation from the doctor who got me in this mess.

I also had problems with my implant which was placed in compltely the wrong angle for a front tooth. Luckily I found a local very experienced dentist who has been placing implants for about 16 years. Thank god he rorted it out for me as I was quite upset by the whole ordeal.

Are our or any posters from the US..and have you been successful in suing a dentist. I had an implant so the parcial would fit better (upper right, third tooth from incisor)My face was black and blue from the eye to below the jawbone. Some weeks later the implant wobbled. Dentist put in a thicker one. However, it was crooked and I had to have a new parcial. I wish I had never done it.

I also have implants done 2 years ago. The dentist tried 4 crowns without any luck. They all cause pain. The left side of my face is painful. It is very sad that people suffer so much from those dentists who have no ethics, no conscious and no skills. They only have greed and take advantages of people like you and myself.

I have seen several dentists and periodontists who are not willing to help me at all. And, I do not know where to go to get help. Please let me know if you know very good periodontists and dentist who are skilled and honest in the bay area of CA.

“Think and study it first and ask around on the pros and cons.” – Absolutely true! There is no harm in doing research first before making a decision, especially if it concerns your dental health. By knowing the procedures, treatment and implications, you are saving yourself from the dangers of agreeing to a procedure which can do more damage.

A very similar thing happened to my mother. She had gotten dental implants but they were done incorrectly. We had no idea until we made an impromptu appointment in Boise Idaho. The dentist there noticed the error. And now we've set up a new appointment to get it fixed!

Hi Marda I ve just had an infected implant removed after 6 weeks of tremendous pain, it was infected. The remaining 2 are fine. I have been complaining about this implant being painful since week 1, after which the other 2 gave me no pain. On coming out of the appointment to have it removed, by another dentist at the same clinic as I refused to be treated by the one who did the implant, I was met by the owners and their solicitor. I have emails that I have sent to the dentist over the last 6 weeks complaining about. The pain, I have been back 7 times and not once did the origional dentist x ray me and diagnose infection. I have since rang the general dental council and he is not even registered. This is a British dentist owned by Hungarians all the dentist fly over to do implants. My email is julia-birch@sky.com if you have any further info that could help me decide what to do. My bridge supported crowns were also a terrible fit and had huge gaps and were two high, the owners have refunded the 1 implant and the other dentist is going to finish my bridge work, she says I don t need another implant, if so why did he put one in, I think maybe I can t have another one because there has been to much damage. It's all very scary, I have paid so I need to have the work finished, but no longer trust the dentist. Should I seek legal advice.

How did you find out that the implant was infected? I have neck pain, sinusitis, fatigue... all things that are new and strange but developed so slowly I can't tell if it's related. Thank you!

I had two implants put in 3 months ago. One got infected after 1 week. I kept having shooting pain on the entire left side of my face. I had to see a neurologist who informed me that due to the surgery and infection,I now have trigeminal neuralgia. It's called the"suicide disease". It's reported as being the worst pain known to mankind. No cure once the nerve is damaged. I would tell anyone thinking of getting implants....don't do it!

Thank you for writing this. I actually am going through a rough time in my life, financially. I am being blessed through a charity for domestic violence, called Give Back a Smile here in the United States. I suffered domestic violence and as a result have depression and majorer depression. I see a therapist regularly. Well, to the point, I wanted implants. I need a couple I think. This next Friday is my last out of 6 visits to the dentists school called Esthetic Professionals, a cosmetic dental school run by Dr. Crispen and his family. They are so nice. Well, they are doing a bridge for me with caps and no implants. I was kind of hoping they would put implants in as they are better I thought but now I am happy to be getting my bridge. I am starting to wonder if they've done enough research on the whole implant idea or just put it out there for the public so they could make more money. They say or I think I've heard that your body can reject on implant? I am not sure. Thank you for your information, the way it was written and sorry for what you are going thru! I hope you feel better and get better as soon as possible. My e-mail is DanaStarr77@yhotmail.com
God Bless
Bye for now

I had 2 implants placed one month ago. A few days ago, I began having sweats upon awakening along with dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat, with waves of anxiety. One implant had been extremely painful with swelling since placement. My oral surgeon removed that implant today and said my body was rejecting either it or the bone graft. He is refunding the charge for the implant. I love my surgeon but would rather have a bridge or nothing after that experience.

prior to having a dental implant, I told the dentist and the surgeon, years ago a mental plate was placed to heal a broken ankle it had to be removed in six months--my body does not like metal --now six months after the implant, it had to be removed..in pain and constant headaches..

So bad to hear about your experiences. I am thinking about having 2 implants placed w/ a bridge, my question to all is what kind of implant did you have (brand name)
the dentist i am thinking to go to uses "Osstem" and "Zimmer" any idea if those are any good.
i would like to know if your problem was the dentist or the implant. thanks

I just had my fourth implant removed due to an infection occurring 6 years after they we're put in. The removal was two weeks ago and the site has not healed properly and is still infected, draining, red, sore. Going tomorrow for suture removal and scared to death of what else will have to be done to get rid of the infection that lingers on.

Im really afraid. Had bone infection 18 months ago, had top teeth removed and bone grafts done. Finally had 4 implants placed with removable/denture without palate, and noticed that one of the implants on Left side was always sore. Had antibiotics to "firm it up" about 2 months ago,
back to dentist 2 weeks ago with excruciating pain, he said it was an adjustment to the denture, back to dentist last week, awful taste and smell in mouth. He did xray and pulled implant.

There is another implant half an inch away from the first one, and now this one is hurting as well. It also feels loose..

I called dentist yesterday, and will see monday...
what next?

I had an implant that failed in less-than-10 years. So far as I know, it was done properly, and I had had an autonomous bone graft. However, the bone around the implant soon began to deteriorate. I believe it was a combination of normal mouth bacteria and bone resorption. The implant was part of a 3-tooth implant "bridge." That was the only thing holding the implanted tooth in, as the bone had completely disappeared in the socket. Removal was the only option, but during the removal, the periodontist noticed that the adjacent implant was about to fail also, so he removed both. He scraped the mandible and decontaminated it, then added bone augmentation (combo cadaver & cow with HGH)and new tissue before suturing. The area was extremely painful, as a "dry socket" developed around the remaining (good) implant. Yesterday, the perio put in 3 additional sutures to secure the gum to the implant. The pain is now better, but I am at the point where I wonder how long this one will last, and I am leaning AGAINST having the 2 failed implants replaced. It just seems to me that grafted or augmented bone is just not good enough to hold the implant permanently. I have another implant that was placed at the time of the extraction of the original tooth, directly into the remaining bone (no augmentation or graft). It will be interesting to see how long this one lasts, but maybe I just have poor bone density. Taking calcium wouldn't help, I was told, and there was nothing that could be done to prevent the bacteria from eating away at the bone. My oral hygiene is very good. The perio did say that perhaps my grinding at night contributed to the early failure of the implants. There was an active bacteria colony at the base of the implants, but nothing that ever made me sick or that affected me in any way. At this point, I wish I had left well-enough alone and done nothing at this time, as I had no pain or other negative effects, other than the colony of bacteria, which my general dentist said could break open and cause a problem at any time. I seem to have a good immune system, and he said my body was just holding the colony at bay & keeping it in check. It bothered me just thinking about those buggars in there chomping away at my tissue.

My advice is for anyone considering implants to proceed carefully. They are not always "permanent," as they are advertised, and may not always be the best solution in every case. I wonder if there is some way to test bone density in the mouth prior to undertaking this treatment. This has certainly been a painful and EXPENSIVE lesson, and I still have 2 implants that will forever be a concern to me. I certainly hope they do not become infected to the point that some have experienced on this blog.

Hi, I am from Mississippi. I just had dental implants put in and when it was all said and done the color is much whiter than I had ask for, I explained to the dentist how important that all the top teeth need to match to one color. I have caps on the upper right side and had the dental implants put in on the upper left side. When I smile now the caps that I have had are a natural white and the dental caps he put that are white white which I ask time after time before the surgery, during the surgery, you are sure you can match the color?
He answered yes. Now when I smile it looks very bad. So very heart broken to know I spent all the money I had been saving for years to get a nice smile and now I have this to deal with. I do not know what to do can anyone please send me some suggestions or who I might could call to help me with this. I am also in my late 50's and waited so long to get a nice smile.

My advise as to whether to have dental implants or not is........ don't do it. I had 2 implants put in in 2005 it took me visiting 12 different dentists thousands of pounds. In 2013 I found a dentist who told me my implants were set in my nerve canal by the dentist who put them in and that my bone was disintegrating round them. He removed both implants and told me he believed I was also allergic to the titanium. No one, none of the previous dentists believed me, I was told I was making it up for attention! ! In 2009 my Dr gave me morphine for the dental pain. I only managed to get off it in August 2013. Even though I no longer have the implants there was so much damage to my bone and nerves I am still on painkillers. I now have a denture which hurts my bone to wear!!!! DO NOT get implants without checking you have enough bone, you're not going to react to the cobalt in the titanium and that the dentist who is going to give you them knows what they are doing.

Hi, I just completed the process of receiving an implant. I am lucky because I was in the military when the whole process was started ( 3 and a half years ago), so it hasn't cost me financially yet...
I have serious concerns for I am separated now.

A root canal had failed previously due to infection and was removed to make way for the implant. I didn't know the risks of implants prior to reading this blog. So since the military was paying, I went a long with it. But it was sincerely an ordeal for me. The first doctor attempted 3 bone graphs, all of which failed. It took a lot of energy as I experienced the discomfort and disappointment. Finally, I had had enough. So I asked to see a different surgeon; I was still not aware of the real risks of implants. The new surgeon was very optimistic (of course), and what was supposed to take 6 months, took about a year and six months. Last Wednesday, the 27th of March 2014. I settled for the implant (how it looks and how it seals up). But I am wondering if I should just have the whole implant surgically removed because... the area was once infected (had been infected also in my childhood), and now, because the gum tissue has receded so much, my biggest concern was the seal (if not sealed, infection would certainly be a problem). I believe the seal isn't good enough.

Sometimes I can taste a nasty taste from the new implant. In any of your experience has there been a nasty taste that went away after time? I know... how would it go away, it is much more likely to just get worse over time. Am I over thinking this, or should I remove it and just wear the dentures? I'm leaning towards full removal of implant related material from my gums.

Thanks,

Vaughan

PS I am actually experiencing flu-like symptoms. Don't know if that is just a coincidence. :-(

Oh Wow, I have had a similar experience! I just went thru a small surgery to have my dental implant removed. For the past one year, I have had ringing in my ears, stiff neck and aching shoulders. I was sent to ENT by my general physician. The ENT said it was due to acidity in my stomach, it may be causing the ringing. Although it sounded odd, I worked on eating less acidic foods. It did not help much. I wrote off the neck and shoulder pain as spending too much time on the computer.

The right side of my face would swell up and get red often. I discussed it with my dentists but none of the dentists I went to saw anything wrong with my teeth. About a month ago, the crown on the implant became loose. Went to the dentist AGAIN. This time she suggested I see a Periodontist. The periodontist broke off the crown with half the implant under it with one pull. It was a little painful but was glad to have the loose crown gone. I went back to have the rest of the implant removed. After 6 shots, digging for an hour and excruciating pain for me, he was NOT able to remove it. I could not get numb enough because the surrounding area was so infected that pH of my mouth changed which kept me from getting numb. He said the implant had been infected for a while.

I went to another oral surgeon. He said he had to order some parts for the removal because implant breakage or removal is very rare and did not ever need them. He finally took it out yesterday and did some bone grafting under IV sedation. Although the procedure did not seem painful, the right side of my face is swollen and still sore. The best part is that I do not have ringing in my ears for the first time in a year. No neck pain or shoulder pain either.

I had the implant for 10 years without any problems till now. I do not want to discourage others from implants but would suggest to get a thorough understanding of pros and cons. As for me, I will not have another one again. I am told this will take 4 to 6 months to completely heal. I plan to get a bridge this time.

I do hope you are much better now, Marda. Some dentists really just want to earn and immediately recommend getting teeth implants. A good advice would be to get a second opinion as it is your safety that’s on the line here. It’s a good thing you were able to have the second implant removed before it also started to get infected, plus it even saved you money.

This is the situation if you don't derive full information of the Denturist before consulting them. You must have to check his total experience and patient reviews before going for a denture implant or any other surgery.

Sorry to hear everyone's stories, I also have a nasty infection after having dental implants placed 3 years ago, I have seen a surgeon and as the bone is deteriorating, he thinks removal is best, my question is would it be better under general anacestic or how painful was it after and during the removal, it has been bad all this time,I just hoped it would get better on its own, but sore always , do your research and only use people who really know what they are doing

Anonymous said...

While I am posting as "anonymous" I can say that not all implants are "bad". First, implants will NOT be like your actual teeth. But a good cosmetic dentist and a good oral surgeon should be able to make the implant crown match your other teeth and feel about as natural as possible. For the most part, they should behave like a normal tooth without any pain. The oral surgeon I used has had a LOT of experience with implants. He was highly recommended by multiple people (not websites or commercials, actual people including other dentists and surgeons). He only used cadaver bone as he said bovine bone is often rejected by a human body (and literally just "sits there"). It is important that your body incorporate the cadaver bone and build on it. For one of my implants, the cadaver bone responded so well it grew over the top of the implant. The surgeon was delighted by this as it showed that the impant was secure in the bone and there was no infection. Panoramic X-rays and maybe CAT scans should be taken in addition to normal X-rays to ensure the implant does not hit the nerve. The healing time after putting in bone, then implant, could be 4-6 months or longer. This is BEFORE any crown is placed. Avoid those "1-day implant" places. It is imperative that the implant be installed correctly and securely and this takes time. The surgeon should be willing to show you all X-rays and items used (mine did). He shold be able to discuss all steps with you (mine did). If your surgeon or dentist is unwilling to do this, RUN to another doctor. After the implant cap is exposed, the dentist can then begin the crown magic. My dentist is so good that she matched my other teeth perfectly. I really cannot tell the difference (and I had a front implant due to tooth absorption). Bottom line: avoid 1-day implant places, find a highly skilled surgeon and a highly skilled dentist. Price for a single implant may be as much as $5K, but some insurances are covering part of this cost. It is worth it, IMO, to spend the time and money for these. Even with my successes, nothing is permanent. However, a good implant on a healthy patient should last 10+ years (some are saying 20-30 years). Even a root canal/crown isn't permanent, but I've had one now for 17 years without issue. Again, good doctors.

Hello - I had 2 implants fitted at different times 4 years and 5 years ago. Within a month of the crown being fitted, I had allergic reactions. My dentist said it wasnt my implants and crowns. My doctors said it was stress and another it was a dermatitis. Second implant and crown and the allergic reactions got worse. Dentist repeated, not the dental work. Five years and symptoms drove me nuts. Joint paid, over sensitised neuropathy of the face scalp and neck, hives, hair loss, and anxiety. No one took me seriously- was even told to get on anti depressants and behave. Finally, a dermatologist's flyer said look at dental work. Had a dentist test for metal allergies - very high on nickel, moderate on copper. Fast removal of crowns, and long search for someone to remove the implants. Meantime the allergen from the crowns and implant has triggered an auto immune that is untreatable - I will probably lose all my hair. From one problem to many others. Everything to do with the implant worked, except my body, it doesnt like it. This repair has cost me a fortune, my new dentist is very good and felt it was a good option. Spoke to the surgeons who do hip replacements - they told me thta sometimes for them everything is done right, but it doesnt work, the patient remains ill. Removal improves their health. I think my dentist has tried to do the best for me, but I think he should have just removed them, replaced with cadaver bone, and create bridges. Im very tired of the itch, pain, and loss of my hair. The risk has been to high. Gill Celliers- gilliancelliers@yahoo.com

I'm glad I came across this post but so sorry to hear about your experience. I'm interested to hear about the outcome as I'm thinking to go that legal route. So please email me at rainm345@hotmail.com. I did two implants (last two teeth lower jaw)two years ago by a dentist who is not my regular one. One of them has gone bad. My regular dentist noticed the bone loss in one of them and asked me to check it out with the dentist who did the implant. I did the next day and they noticed the same bone loss and they said one needs to be removed and it will cost about 5K.
They are trying to not take any responsibility for it as they claimed it relates to cleanliness and lack of regular dental visits. I have told them that I do brush my teeth twice a day. Do professional cleaning by dental hygienist every six month and have a dental check and x-rays once a year but still its my fault. Their office advertise that plants last for twenty years and mine did for two..I'm in good health and have no medical issues that could explain the failure. I would like to see what options I have available.

Don't waste your time looking for an attorney.
I have been to (3), and they all said, "it was not worth their time in damages".
If they cannot make $100,000.00, they will not even look at you.
Funny, when you are leaving, they urge you to "go find counsel asap".
Dental surgeons are telling all of us we are candidates, even when we tell them every stinking bit of our medical history.
I had the exact same thing JUST happen to me.
#5 failed 3 months after getting a crown, and now they want to take the crown off #12, even though it is fine (they think) and then change it all to some "ball & socket" technique that I will have to clip on and off.
I did not sign up for that!
Plus the clips will now NOT be near where the implants were. The UGLY clips will SHOW, and I will look and talk like a fool.
I spend $13,000.00 to be worse off, and now there is no plan at all, besides the one I will not do.
I think I have to have #5 removed, AGAIN, and pay out of my own pocket.

I am so disappointed and even worse, no due process to get reimbursed.
My periodontist never ordered an antibiotic when he pulled the teeth and added the bone grafting..TWICE!
That is a malpractice and why I got an infection/bone loss so quickly.
The 3-D x-rays are expensive as is the anesthesiologist for IV sedation.
Crowns cost me $3,750.00!
Dental insurance is worthless and the IRS stopped allowing us to deduct "artificial teeth", off our taxes, starting January 2013, the year my nightmare began.

I am not done yet and I have no idea what is to come and how much it is going to cost.
Filed a complaint with Public Health to see if they can mediate me going to someone else, and he foots the bill.
Wish me luck....I could use some about now.

Glad to find this blog and so many posts. I wish I would found it a year ago, before I've done 6 teeth implants. The dental crowns are horrible and the dentist seems to care less about my bite and my look.
For any new reader, Don't do tooth implant! Tooth implant is a bad joke or even worst: it's a hoax!

Unknown said...

That's really very unfortunate i too had dental implants but unlike yours my experience was very much comfortable and till now I haven't faced any issue on the same. If you want to consult my dentist or want to read more blogs on the dental implants by them then kindly refer the following link.

Quite shocking! It is best to gather more information about the dentist before opting for a treatment. Most Dental implants in Glendale are done with utmost care and caution. The success rate is quite high. However, proper care should be taken after the procedure is over. Smokers and diabetic patients should be particularly careful.

I have had dental implants for more than 10 years. About 2 years ago, I had one just behind my eye tooth, and one on my lower mouth, from a new dentist that came to town and had all these wonderful reviews about his services.(don't ever make a decision on google or yelp reviews) within a year, I was getting pain across the left side of my mouth, and my teeth, including the one with the implant crown began to hurt and ache. Very sharp pains almost sinus like. My neck and throat felt as if I had the flue. My eyes began to get red and burn, and my eye tooth really began to hurt as though it was infected. I went back to the dentist and he x-rayed and said it had to be a sinus infection causing the pain etc. He put me on a strong antibiotic, but it did no good to stop the tooth and gum pain. I went to a periodontist that specializes in gum disease, and he took a cat scan and within 30 seconds said I can see your problem. He told me the implant had been improperly placed in too close proximity to the root and nerves of the eye tooth, and the implant was slowly killing the tooth, and the bone that surrounded all teeth on that side. He suggested I have the eye tooth and the implant behind it removed and replaced. He also told me that the implants that had been done 10 years ago were very professionally done, correctly placed and looked tip top. I have not experienced any problem with the other one I had done 2 years ago, but the periodontist said that it is very sloppily placed, and that it has more of a cantilever effect on the implant, and at some point it will begin to give problems. He told he sees this problem quite frequently where the implant is not properly placed within the "bite" and that is usually the cause of most problems with implants. I have scheduled him to remove the 2 implants next Tuesday and go thru him with all new implants.

Regret to know that.Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost a tooth. A dental implant is just one of many ways an individual can replace lost or damaged teeth. See more at dental bridges

I am glad I found this site. I had a tooth knocked out when I was hit by a car. My dentist told me that a tooth can lose its root after trauma, become loose, and eventually fall out. I was advised to have an implant. Well, I could not believe the rigmarole (not to mention cost) involved in one implant. I was to see a specialist, be evaluated. Maybe the bone would not be strong enough to support the implant, which means a bone graft. Then comes all the preparation, removal of the old tooth, the screw, waiting for it to heal. Months of weekly visits. My days off from work would be spent having the implant checked out. Yes, I had dental insurance, but would it cover any of this? Also, the specialist who was to eval the implant was in a distant suburb, & since I don't drive, that meant cab fare. Weekly visits for many months afterward. Maybe the implant would take, maybe it wouldn't. Who in Hades would give up one year of their life for ONE TOOTH?? I have a "flipper" that looks good & does the job, fair enough!

I have a story to top them all. I went to a high-tech dentist in a fancy downtown office. He seemed to have all the answers, and worked out a $40,000 treatment plan for an implant-supported bridge on the bottom and two implants on top, to be completed in six months. Ten months later, I was nowhere near finished and he stopped returning my calls. He also mutilated the underside of my tongue with a painful impromptu frenectomy, placed one implant in the wrong location and buried it, later claiming that he told me about it "during surgery" and would probably refund for it later. He sent an assistant in when I was sedated to retrieve my leftover Halcion pills for his secret stash. I got a staph infection on the inside of my lip from an unsterilized needle. Finally, he fractured my mandible. Apparently there was not adequate bone for any of the implants, which were not fully screwed in and have been rocking and creating more bone loss. He has fully refunded my money, and I will undergo another series of procedures with a top-notch surgeon and prosthodontist team who have passed along my story far and wide to other professionals. This time, the bill will be around $65,000 to repair all the damage done to bone after the last ten months and remove the sub-quality implants the other guy used. At least they can pull the top two out of my sinus cavities...it's really miserable. As you might assume, we're not done with guy #1 yet...people, DO your homework and don't take shortcuts! Letting a general dentist handle implants is like letting a car mechanic fix your Rolex.

I had tooth implant and my sister had wisdom tooth extraction. It all went well and deal no problem after the surgery. The family always trust our teeth to flushing family dental for a long time now. We had our teeth checked on a regular basis. They're like a family to us too, that's how they treat their patients, that's why kids in the family loves them and not afraid of them.

I wish i would have read this blog before I got that nightmare implant! It has cause me so much pain, stress and depression, anyone who see this blog and its thinking to get implants, Do not do it, I have gone through a nerve damage, the periodontist who placed the implant told me the procedure was risk free and that my bone was perfect for an implant!!!! All big lies to get Money!!!. 7 weeks after the implant earaches, headaches, numb lip/chin etc, today they took the implant out. A friend recomended me a professor with more than 25 years of experience doing and removing implants, extracting the implant was done in front of students as I agree to let the students watch, it was not easy to remove that implant as it was positioned wrongly, and it was right next to the nerve canal, after removing that implant today and reading this post I think I made the right desicion, I have faith that my nerve will heal and life will be back to normal

I feel for you, If you are now with the top dentist, just believe you will recover ask them to advice as if you were their mother, I am going through this awful implant experience too, implant done by unexperienced Dentist, but the worse someone recomended her and I didn't do my homework and now........ Well there is not way back!

Anonymous said...

Hi Sarah, I had my implant removed too, I was wondering how was your healing process? I have paresthesia after the removal I can't feel my lip/chin, I had that before anyaway, but did this happen to you too or was your nerve not damages at all during the procedure?

Was your implant fully integrated in your jaw bone? If so how did it go!?

Taryn said...

I had a titanium implant post placed in my upper jaw on May 14th 2015 to replace a missing tooth (that wasn't visible). May 15th I was at work and blacked out. I faceplanted and knocked out my two front teeth. I had to leave work, only worked for one hour before I fell. I don't recall what led up to the blackout or that I even fell. Only when a fellow manager noticed I was "out of it" and I had something all over my face. It was semi dried blood, I looked at her in disbelief. She grabbed my arm and walked me to the bathroom. Once I was in the bathroom I saw what she was talking about. It looked as if I had a beard of blood, mustache and all! (I'm female) I also had invisalign in, upper jaw only, to fix the teeth that had shifted before the denist talked me into the implant. I smiled in the mirror and noticed it was full of blood. My automatic reaction was to take it out and rinse the tray. When I did that my teeth literally fell into the sink. I was baffled, she asked me what happened, I couldn't recall. I thought I was having a nightmare, and was obviously in shock because it didn't hurt. I told her I called my denist, who I had seen 4 hours before this happened, told him that I took out my invisalign tray and my teeth came out with it. He asked what happened, because your teeth don't fall out of your mouth, I said I don't know. What do I do!? I had to drive to his office so he could replant the teeth. One came out completely. The other one chipped, but we weren't aware until months later. I ended up having root canals on both teeth, and later had to get the one that was chipped pulled. So now I'm missing a front tooth and have this metal post towards the back of my mouth. I suffered a concussion and of coarse facial trauma. I still don't know what happened, due to crappy cameras, and lack of witnesses. This was a day after my implant was put in. That's not even the kicker. Ever since I've had this implant I have had pre-syncope, daily headaches (some severe), body aches, heart palpitations, increased anxiety, depression, nausea, pupil dialiation without change in lighting, brain fog, fatigue. I have been to alot of dr's who cannot help me or my symptoms. I can't help but think that the cause of my fall, and symptoms I've experienced since then are from the implant. I haven't been able to return to work. Nor did I get workers comp, or Short Term Disability. It's now November, I consulted my denist and the one who placed the implant. I told them my concerns and they told me that there is no infection. They don't believe the implant is causing all these complications. I'm in my early 20's and was very active without incident before this implant. I want it out, but the denist and the one who can take it out disagree with me. Saying that my implant is fully integrated into my jaw, which will result in a major surgery, including removal of jaw bone, bone graft, etc. Also the risk of damaging my nasal cavity and surrounding teeth. I have a temporary partial front tooth. Which they insist I get an implant. This $4,000 procedure has turned a $12,000 nightmare and counting. Has anyone had a fully integrated healthy dental implant removed? Major complications other than huge hole burned in your pocket? I wish I'd read this before I agreed to this. This has been a lifechanging event in my life. The removal may or may not take away my symptoms. I'm at a loss for what to do. I just want to be able to work again! My email is newreality2911@gmail.com any input is greatly appreciated!!!

"Most of the time when an implant is properly placed into healthy bone there is not much to worry about. Keeping them clean is the most important thing for patients to do. Over 5 years you can get a little bone loss around the implant which can cause some cosmetic concerns if its placed on the front of the mouth."

I just got implants like 3 months ago and two of them i haven't had any trouble but just one of them which is in the front just fell out unexpectedly. Now i did have a tooth pulled and that same day an implant placed right were the tooth was pulled. I am wondering if there was maybe an infection in the tooth which was pulled and because it wasn't cure from infection if that would have an issue why that one implant just fell out(implant plus the crown! I do remember getting sick right before the whole thing happening so just curious if i just had it placed in the area wrongly. has anyone ever had early on issues with implants???? If anyone can answer any of my issues please feel free to contact me at beautiful.peaceful79@gmail.com thannk you and i appreciate that info

I am 69 years old now and I had 4 implants and a bar put in my lower jaw this past Feb.,2016.I have had pain from one implant mostly and bad throbbing when I climb stairs, ladders or walk quickly. The Dentist told me there are no nerves anywhere near the implants so it cannot be hurting ? She is wrong and she got really upset with me and stopped giving me appointments for a month.I have been to see her about 15 times and she has told me they cannot be hurting and did another CT Scan that said it was OK. They are not and today was my last visit to her and I now might see a lawyer as this cost me over $13,000.00 and I am still in pain. I am in the Vancouver,B.C.,Canada area. Anyone have this kind of trouble nearby ?

I had 3 implants done last July, 2016. I was convinced to have it because my dentist's explanations about the procedures were very promising. I was honest with my health records--gum disease, bone loss and with pre-diabetes, but he said it's ok. After I had the implants, my gums were always in pain and swollen. I became bestfriends with anti-biotics and pain killers to ease the pain. During my visit with the dentist last week, he suddenly decided that he needs to open my gums to see what's going on with my gums around the implants. In the middle of the surgery he stated that he needs to take out the 3 implants and put some more bones. It was a horrifying experience, the procedure was very painful and then he needed to put some more anaesthesia in the areas where he's working on because I was crying in pain. My whole body was shaking, very traumatic. I don't know if I would still want him to put the implants back in the future. Whenever it reminds me that I will need to see him next week for a follow-up and remove the stitches I will start to feel anxious. My nose, cheeks, and mouth were severely swollen for 5 days, it now came down a little bit but still some bruises visible around my mouth.

My question is, if I opt not to let him put back the implants any longer...do I have the right to get a refund? Very expensive though.

Nice post, Thanks for Sharing...!!!
When tooth implants go bad, it's crucial to share experiences like these to raise awareness. Seeking top dental implants is a must. Always research your dental professional thoroughly and prioritize quality over cost. Don't let a bad experience deter you from the potential benefits of well-executed dental implants.
